Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, we have four classes: Pink, Yellow, Green and Platinum.

All classes follow the Equals Curriculum alongside the National Curriculum, carefully adapted to meet the individual needs of our pupils. Learning is delivered through a play-based approach, allowing children to explore, engage and develop at their own pace.

A wide range of sensory resources and hands-on activities are used to support learning, encourage communication, and promote curiosity, confidence and independence.

We use a Total Communication approach to support pupils in expressing their wants, needs and preferences, as well as enabling them to comment on and engage with the world around them. This approach values and uses a range of communication methods, ensuring every child has a voice and is supported in the way that works best for them.

These may include spoken language, Makaton signing, symbols, visual supports, objects of reference, photographs, communication boards, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems, including electronic communication aids where appropriate.

Our classes have enjoyed visits from PAT (Pets As Therapy) dogs Loki and Arna, along with their trained handlers. These visits provide valuable opportunities for pupils to build confidence, develop social and communication skills, and experience calm, positive interactions in a supportive environment.

Some classes have taken part in off-site learning experiences to support the development of independence and life skills, including visits to Tesco. These experiences help pupils practise real-life skills in the community in a meaningful and supportive way.

Other classes have participated in horse riding and equine-assisted therapy, which support pupils’ physical development, emotional wellbeing, confidence and communication skills.
