Key Stage 4

We have three Key Stage 4 classes – Bronze, Blue and Aqua. Our Key Stage 4 provision offers a personalised, practical and aspirational curriculum that supports a wide range of learning, communication and social needs. Students follow accredited pathways in core subjects, alongside life skills, vocational learning and enrichment opportunities that promote independence, confidence and employability. Learning is delivered through small-group teaching, hands-on experiences and carefully planned off-site opportunities, ensuring every student is supported to make progress and prepare successfully for their next steps.

Bronze

Students in Bronze class participate in learning which enables students to engage in a combination of core subjects and alternative curriculum opportunities, which include vocational accreditation. These consist of:

Fast Forward, Duke of Edinburgh, The Apex Centre

Multi-activities at Highfields and Bookham Schools:

Students work in small groups of 2-3 pupils with an adult in 3 workspaces across the school. The curriculum is led by the pupils EHCP provision and their SEMH learning needs, with a focus on social communications skills, collaborative working and practical activities.

Blue

Students in blue class have more complex communication and sensory learning needs. In core subjects they follow AQA unit awards for English, Maths and Science and digital life skills.

They also complete ASDAN exploring aspirations which cover the following pathways:

  • Community
  • Relationships
  • Health
  • Employment

These pathways provide opportunities for independent creativity such as music, art and cooking.

Aqua

Students in Aqua Class participate in a wide range of learning activities. In core subjects they follow AQA ELC unit awards in English Maths and Science that provide them with opportunities to build skills and knowledge essential for school, college and the workplace.

Aqua students engage in the ASPIRE curriculum, which provides hands on practical skills in areas such as Enterprise, Hospitality and Ecology. The also study digital lifestyle to enable them to engage in an increasing digital way of life.

Other opportunities include horse-riding, Duke of Edinburgh, swimming and art and access to a varied careers programme.

 

The Apex Centre

Weekly sessions give students the opportunity to learn a whole range of construction skills, and complete a Level 1 vocational qualification.  The units of study include:

  • Brickwork/Blockwork

  • Wallpapering

  • Carpentry

  • Plastering

  • Construction

  • Health and Safety

  • Measurements of distance and length

 

Fast Forward - INTRODUCTION TO MOTORSPORT ENGINEERING

Every week pupils go offsite to Teamsport in Farnborough to complete a vocational course that takes them through five areas of motorsport engineering. Using a range of theory and practical tasks learners will develop their skills both academically and practically.  The Introduction to Motorsport Engineering programme is an accredited training programme from SEG & FFVT which enables learners who have an interest in this area of study to acquire knowledge and skills to aid progression to further study or employment.

 

Highfield and Brookham School multi-activities

Pupils spend one afternoon a week at a local school completing a variety of activities, throughout the year.  These can include:

  • Physical education - team or individual sports; tag-rugby, hockey, golf

  • Design and Technology

  • Experiences of workplaces - working in the Cafe at the school

  • Swimming/water polo
