What Does the Governing Body Do?
The Governing Body plays a vital role in the strategic leadership of the school. Governors work closely with the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team to ensure that every child receives the best possible education in a safe, supportive, and stimulating environment.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Setting the aims and objectives for the school.
- Ensuring policies and procedures are relevant and effective.
- Monitoring progress against targets to ensure the school meets its objectives.
- Acting as a “critical friend” – providing both challenge and support.
Governance Structure
To strengthen accountability and focus, the Governing Body operates through a combination of full board meetings and specialist committees:
Standing Committees:
- Resources Committee
Oversees finance, staffing, premises, and health & safety.
Responsibilities include budget planning, monitoring expenditure, and ensuring compliance with statutory requirements. - Curriculum & Standards Committee
Focuses on teaching, learning, and pupil achievement.
Responsibilities include monitoring curriculum delivery, reviewing assessment data, and supporting strategies to raise attainment. - Pay Committee
Reviews and determines pay decisions in line with policy. - Headteacher Performance Management Committee
Oversees the appraisal process for the Headteacher and sets performance objectives.
Additional Panels or Working Groups
These may be convened as needed to address specific issues (e.g., exclusions, complaints) and report back to the full Governing Body.
